in the message thread linked to from the "date parsing" item on the
"bite-sized tasks" list, it is mentioned that localization is important,
and that support for ambiguous date formats should be eliminated.
Aren't those two goals contradictory? It seems to me that if I enter a
date such as 2/4/2004 that interpreting this as a date in february or in
april is *exactly* what localization is supposed to be about. i.e,
interpretation of ambiguous date formats should always be done according
to the localization context. If my locale is U.S. and I type 22/4/2004,
however, *that* should prompt a warning: even though this date is
*unambiguous* it contravenes the current *locale* setting and thus is
suspect.
I'd much rather my machine gives the results *I* expect (as expressed
through my localization settings) for 2/4/2004 (a date in february) and
22/4/2004 (a typo) than to complain about the former and silently accept
the latter.
