Understood! Many thanks to all the people who replied. My main question
about
modules has been answered: it is clearly possible in principle to add the
functions I need to Subversion in a clean way.

Next week, after my holiday, I shall carry on studying the source in the
hope of understanding it sufficiently to make a contribution after 1.0 is
released and debugged. I'll also think about use cases to explain clones
to people who are used to branches and tags.
