Our best bet is probably to just not to check out symlinks on Windows.
We could put in a shortcut, but it's probably not what people want
(although versioning of Windows shortcuts might be valuble).
Properties lets us version metadata for systems which support that
metadata, and that's valuble for homogeneous environments, but we
can't make metadata exist on all systems in a heterogeneous
environment.
