I agree with you. But in practice, the filenames
precommit.conf
postcommit.conf
were a little too hard to read, and too much alike, for comfort. When
I added the hyphen...
pre-commit.conf
post-commit.conf
...I found them *much* easier to take in at a glance, and to
distinguish from one another.
Of course, now that there were hyphens in the actual filenames, I
realized it would be consistent to put corresponding underscores in
the C identifiers, as is customary when dealing with C's preference
for interpreting hyphen as the subtraction operator, because not a
whitespace-delimited, excuse me, whitespace_delimited language.
Sigh.
