This actually was the intent...but only because I didn't understand
the problem that Ben was trying to solve which prompted the change.
It occured to me that the functionality, while not necessary for Ben's
purposes any more, could still prove useful, but I admittedly had no
pressing necessitation after fully grasping Ben's issue at hand.

Jim, if you oppose with technical reason that overshadows a specific
need Greg S. might have seen in tree.c, I have no problems reverting
the change. If you oppose with fuzzy gut reason, you'll get to revert
it yourself! ;-)
