i.e. is an abbreviation of the Latin "id est," translated "that is."

e.g. is an abbreviation of the Latin "exempli gratia," roughly
     translated "for example."

-Fitz, who has to say Aye Eee or Eee Gee out loud every time he uses
       them to remember which means what.
