We simply haven't hacked up the configury and makefiles to have "make
install" work yet. All testing is done inside the build tree. I think we
don't support building outside the source tree, either.

Right now all of this is low-priority; it's not needed for development.
But if you'd like to tackle these issues, we'll be happy to accept
patches to make it work.
