So I retried my update:

> cvs server: Updating expat-lite
> cvs update: move away expat-lite/.cvsignore; it is in the way
> C expat-lite/.cvsignore
> cvs update: move away expat-lite/CHANGES; it is in the way
> C expat-lite/CHANGES
> U expat-lite/Makefile.in
> cvs update: move away expat-lite/asciitab.h; it is in the way
So, I have found that when I have this problem, I need to
blow away expat-lite/* and refetch that (why should this happen??)
BUT:
> $ cvs update -d expat-lite
> cvs server: User 'bkorb' cannot access
Why can I not access? :-(
