Hello, all. Have been rather silent on this list for a while, since
we've just been dealing with office-setup bureaucracy and such.
I'd like to update you all on what's going on.
There are three full-time programmers for this project: myself, Ben
Collins-Sussman, and Jim Blandy. Jim is actually being donated to
this project by his current employer (a free software company), while
Ben and I will be working for Collab.Net directly. Physically, Ben
and I will occupy one office in Chicago, while Jim works from his home
in Bloomington, Indiana (about a four hour drive from Chicago).
We three had originally planned to spend the week of May 1-7 holed up
here in Chicago solidifying the design of Subversion, then come out to
SF on May 8th, and spend a few days discussing the design (hopefully a
chance for many on this list to physically meet). After that comes
coding, coding, coding, until release. :-)
Unfortunately, Jim is working overtime to wrap up an important project
for his employer, and it turns out he probably won't be able to start
working on Subversion until (approximately) May 7th.
So our original schedule has been pushed one week later; Jim will come
up to Chicago as soon as he can (May 8th or before), and then we will
all come out to SF around May 15th. In the meantime, Ben and I will
try to get as much done as we can on the design, with the
understanding that we may have to tear some of it up once Jim's on
board.
For those who don't know, the basic repository scheme described
subversion.html comes from Jim, and he's been thinking hard about
version control systems for a long time. So I believe it's worth
waiting an extra week to have him.
That's all for now; sorry about all the delay, but things should start
happening soon.
Best,
-Karl
