mime/confusing checkout error

Odd issues after converting to subversion.

Binary files that have only one revision seem to be giving us
checkin/checkout problems. I can use Tortoise SVN to "Open" the files, and
they display fine. I can "save as" from the web front end, and the files
are fine.

however, when I check the files out, they are broken, corrupted, or give
"inconsistent line ending style" (tortoise).

What is even weirder is that I can check out the broken files, save a good
version over the top of the broke files, commit the non-broken version, and
it still ends up broken when I try to check out again.

I've tried manually setting the mimetype properties, and that hasnt worked.

i'm basically at a loss on how I can make these "right". Any suggestions on
things I can check?

tia,
d
