Problem accessing repository through svn+ssh schema

I have problems accessing my repository through the svn+ssh accessing
schema. ssh access to the target server is OK:

hoel_at_pc081634:~> ssh srverc

Have a lot of fun...

Connection to srverc closed.
hoel_at_pc081634:~> ssh srverc svnserve -t
( success ( 2 2 ( ) ( edit-pipeline svndiff1 absent-entries commit-revprops depth log-revprops partial-replay ) ) )

The svnserve process serves until <Ctrl>-<D> is pressed. Accessing
through svn leads to:

hoel_at_pc081634:~> LANG=C svn ls svn+ssh://srverc/srv/svn/repos/MEMOS/
svn: Connection closed unexpectedly

hoel_at_pc081634:~> LANG=C svn --version; ssh srverc svnserve --version
svn, version 1.4.6 (r28521)
...
svnserve, Version 1.5.7 (r36142)
...

How do I get access to my repository throug svn+ssh?
