As Andy Levy said, the write-through proxy speeds up read access. If you do a significant amount of development at a remote site, you may well want to speed up write access as well, in which case (if commercial software is an option for you) take a look at WANdisco's Subversion MultiSite <http://www.wandisco.com/subversion/multisite/> which solves exactly that problem.
