svnsync init rejects URL that contain spaces, even if they are escaped or quoted

Unfortunately, one of the repositories that I want to back up with
svnsync has a URL that contains spaces. I have tried escaping the spaces
with backslashes. I have also tried enclosing the entire URL string in
quotes (""). svnsync still insists the URL is malformed.

Is there some other method of escaping spaces that I don't know about?
Or, is this a bug?
