what's the current situation WRT "immutable" tagging?

i'm sure this topic comes up on a regular basis and i've already
poked around but couldn't find a definitive answer -- what's the
current best practice with respect to tagging and knowing that what
you've tagged is immutable?

obviously(?), a simple copy-based tag can always be checked out
again and modified. as i see it based on what others have written,
the only true way to represent an immutable tag is via the revision
number, but i don't see a way to somehow tie or alias that to a tag.
or am i just missing it? thanks.

it's not critical, i'm just curious what the state of immutable
tagging is these days.
