apparently uname -a doesn't tell you everything about your distro:

From my desktop running Ubuntu Hardy Heron
$uname -a
Linux desktop 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux

 $ cat /etc/*release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.04.1"

From an old Gentoo box:
# uname -a
Linux Fileserver 2.6.22-gentoo-r8 #1 SMP Sat Sep 29 08:20:58 EDT 2007
i686 Pentium III (Katmai) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Fileserver ~ # cat /etc/*release
Gentoo Base System release 1.12.9
