svn:// behavior

couple of questions for the list:

1) why does the first 'svn status' consistently take much longer than
the second. i've this referred to as the "hot cache" situation, can
someone explain what this means?

2) if i use 'svn --password will that be faster than just plain 'svn'
since svn isn't required to the user workspace to get the password?
