How to mark a project inactive?

From: Chris <shef31_at_yahoo.com>

We have projects organized as directories in a subversion repository.
Some of these projects were created by mistake; others have been
superseded by other projects. I'd like to mark the old projects as
inactive, make it impossible to update them, and possibly hide them so
users can't check them out.

Is this possible?

We use Subclipse, if that helps.
