"inconsistent line ending style" on a directory?

Why does it care about line endings on a directory? How can I
persuade it to stop caring so I can do a propget against this
directory?

$ svn propget svn:externals 'https://host.name.com/svn/some/direc/tory'
svn: Inconsistent line ending style

(Yes, I doctored the URL)
