New Subversion user, question on installation

Good afternoon, all...

Brand new Subversion user (but with a fair amount of CVS experience) with a
basic-level installation question that so far I haven't seen specifically
answered...

Fedora Core 2 (and yes, there is a good reason why I'm restricted to Core
2, rather than a later release, for this particular installation) comes
with Subversion version 1.0.x (I forget which "x") installed. I would like
to upgrade to 1.3.2, and plan to build and install from sources rather than
the RPM.

Out of the FC2 box, Subversion is installed in /usr/bin and usr/lib, and I
plan to install the upgrade in the default usr/local/bin and usr/local/lib
locations.

Do I need to completely un-install the FC2 out-of-the-box Subversion
installation first, and if so, what is the best way to do that?
