Sometimes large repositories become problematic, see [1].

Smaller repositories does allow you to partition them up across servers
if there is a performance problem. With a single gigantic repository
that kind of load balancing is not an option.

There is always a point beyond which a system does not scale. I am not
sure that anyone has any hard numbers on how large a repository can
become before something begins to break down. (If they do, please share
with the rest of us. : )
