I almost forgot: Something we recently tried for this purpose was to
make use of Subversion's WebDAV abilities. We mounted the repository
in as a read-only WebDAV mount point on the server, then made
Apache's DocumentRoot point at that. The performance ended up being
very bad, crossing into ridiculous for directory listings, so we had
to shut it off. So, to save you some trouble, I don't recommend
trying that.
