One of the hassles of managing a mailing list is dealing with the
bounces. So mailing list software has machinery to handle that
automatically. The assumption is that things shouldn't bounce unless
the address has become invalid. In that case, it is removed from the
list.

What the mailer is doing is allow for the fact that you may have a
problem at your end, and gives you a chance to repair it. I've seen
those messages a number of times (on other lists) -- they happen when
our local mail server is having trouble, so I ask our IT manager to
fix things.

In your case, I think the problem is in your antivirus software. It's
wrong to bounce mail for that reason. For one thing, bouncing it will
generate a message back to the name in the header, which is always a
forgery so you're bothering innocent bystanders. For another, it
messed up mailing lists, as you found out.

So the best solution is to fix your antivirus setup so viruses are
silently discarded.
