if by not straightforward to set up you mean "you will spend more time
setting it up than it will take to do the rest of the work on your project"
I agree.

If you stray from the developers linux distro forget it.

If you go gforge and want to use it for real work, I highly recommend you
purchase a support agreement from the gforge group.

they are helpful and can prevent you from wasting many nonplanned hours
playing with config files.

Not that I found trac almost trivially easy to install and configure. If it
meets your needs I'd go with it. It is not nearly a powerful as gforge but
from where you are coming from it seems even trac would be a leap forward.
