Which encoding did you use for umlauts? (iso8859-1, utf-8, etc.?).

I usually get problems with subversion when filenames contain UTF-8 characters
and locale's LC_CTYPE is NOT set to UTF-8 locale... (with locales like
en_US.UTF-8 or lt_LT.UTF-8 everything works fine...).
