Do you have a /bin/sh? If not that could well be a source of many of your
problems! On my machine, it is simply a link to /bin/bash. But it has to be
there. Many rely on it. Could well be the source of your yum problems too...

> ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 May 26 06:36 /bin/sh -> bash
