That is easy and I have fallen into this trap with 1.1.4 too.

install-sh has CR/LF line ends and some (version of) Linux tools do not like
that. So convert it to LF ends only. (It is the only file to convert.) I am
surprised that you got to install, I did not get that far.

For example with
tr -d "\r" < oldfile > newfile

I had the problem on ext2
