But how to make this work when the file is only in the branch, and not in the
current checkout?

A command like the above says
svn: 'testdistrlist.cpp' does not appear to be a working copy path

I also tried "svn update", it just says "Skipped <url>"
I also tried "svn co", it says "<url> refers to a file, not a directory".

So, how do I check out a single file from another branch, when it's not in the current branch?
