Hi Glen,
I have had decent success using "Locked Area Lite":
http://www.locked-area.com/html/
This is the free version, but it works fine to allow people to manage
their own passwords, which result in .htaccess and .htpasswd files being
manipulated in directory. Then I just tie in those files in a normal
fashion for Apache. I also use SSL and a self-signed certificate, so
that Note that in my setup I've disabled the ability for people to
sign up themselves. That's the default mode, but since there's no
moderation that would not be suitable, I don't want just anybody being
able to sign up and get access to the repo. So I typically use the admin
interface to add somebody with a default password. Locked area lite will
email them about this, and they can come in and change their pass, and
manage their pass themselves from then on.
I would be interested in hearing from anybody else using similar techniques.
A web UI to manipulate LDAP accounts would also obviously work, as it's
very easy to tie in LDAP access to Apache.
