error during commit: Successful edit status returned too soon

From: James Berry <james_at_jberry.us>

I'm encountering a very frustration problem with svn, running svn://
protocol.

Often while trying to commit a batch of files, freshly added to a
project, I get the following error:

Transmitting file data ..svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: Successful edit status returned too soon

Unfortunately, the "details follow" doesn't tell me much, other than
that it seems svn has somehow lost its brains during the transaction.

Can somebody give me a clue to what I can do to stop this problem, or
where I might start looking to determine the source of this bug? Would
a dump of the tcp stream help?

svn client and server are both 1.1.3, running on Mac OS X.
