per-directory access control

Hello,
    My thanks to everyone who emailed me with my apache issue. The fix was
an automated shell script that does the permissions change.
    I've implemented per-directory access control on a repository in a
virtual host block. In the access file i have this:
[repos1:/]
user = rw

This i hope will grant the user read/write access to the entire repository,
subdirectories, tags, branches, trunk, while denying everyone else. Is this
block correct?
    Also, still looking for a way of passing authentication via https.
    Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
Dave.
