can't use https on server

I've just upgraded my freeBSD 4.9 system to
apache 2.0.52
and now find I cannot use https locall on the server machine.
On my win32 clients I can use https so apache seems to be configured OK.
The error says
svn: Unrecognized URL scheme 'https://mymachine/svn/public'
Anyone know what I did wrong?
