svn exit/return/status codes

hi...

i'm trying to determine where i can find the error/status codes of the svn
client if i use the client from perl/php via a system function call... i'm
exploring creating a simple implementation using a few of the svn calls...

can't seem to find the informatation via the subversion docs/google...

ie:

 foo = exec('svn ls svn://foo.com/repos/trunk')

the return error/status should allow me to know when the client function has
succeeded/failed...

thanks for any pointers/assistance...
