Permanently deleting files from the repository

Is there a way to permanently delete a file or directory from the
repository - not just from the current revision.
I suppose the main reason to do this is to reduce the physical size of
the repository.

So, for example - I accidently added a huge binary data file to the
repository. I deleted it with SVN delete .... but now when I backup my
repository - I am forever carrying this huge unneeded file.

Can I can get rid of the file permanently from the repository to reduce
the size of the repository?

Bernie.
