Uncomplete working copies (non-recursive checkout)

Hello,

I'm a bit curious about the status of issue #695 ("svn checkout -N"
should actually work):

  http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=695

It is marked as "started", but the target milestone is not until 2.0.
Anybody care to comment? Kevin?

I'm obviously one of those unfortunate people who have come to depend
on the ability in CVS to handle uncomplete working copies: Our
repository is too big to conveniently allow for checking out
everything all the time, and it is not possible to organize the
directory structure so that each needed partial view is a complete
subtree (mainly because the views are overlapping).

I'd like to hear how people cope with this problem in real life
projects. Do everybody simply avoid it? Does non-recursive checkout
work good enough most of the time? Are there any acceptable
workarounds?
