The scripts currently out there for VSS migration are only so so.
However, much of this is due to VSS itself. We were going to attempt to
preserve history from our VSS database - but because our VSS repositoy
was so large this became impossible. In fact, we stopped the program
after it ran for over 4 days but was no where near being finished.
In the end we decided to just get snapshots from VSS and interesting
points in time (i.e. final release bits for various versions.) I
started our Subversion repository with an import of the earliest version
we wanted kept around in VSS. Then I would carefully overlay each later
version in the working directory & check in each new version as a single
commit. This worked out pretty well for our needs. We have kept the
VSS repository around just in case someone may have needed some older
history - but no one has looked yet...

Some of us at work are try to get our company to leave VSS and move to
subversion. I've been working with TortoiseSVN and Apache with great
success. To make our case for the move stronger, I've been searching
for a few other tools for SVN but would like to get some information
from those who have first hand experience. So I'm turning to the list
to see what you suggest.
I'd have an easier time of making the case for the switch if I could
find:
1) A windows program for configuring users and access rights. We have a
large database of programs and projects and some of them have restricted
rights. I know that I can make these changes manually but my boss will
make the point that he can do it easily from within VSS.
2) A windows program to let SVN users manage their own password or, even
better, a way to use the user's domain login for SVN login. I'm
currently trying to get mod_auth_ldap working with Apache but that's an
email for another list.
3) A windows program to copy the VSS database to SVN and preserver the
history. I've found a couple of tools that claim to do this but haven't
tried them yet. Have any of you used something similar? How well did
it work? What problems did you run into? Do you have any advice?
Finally, if anyone has used any other Windows tools with SVN that they
like, I'd love to hear about it.
