Thank you for the information. I'm indeed using a prepackaged 1.0.

BTW, I find it difficult to navigate subversion's
web page. I found the release notes of 1.1 by going to
http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk/INSTALL and manually
editing the URL to find the CHANGES file, which mentions the
http link http://subversion.tigris.org/svn_1.1_releasenotes.html.

AFAICS there's no link to it from anywhere on the first page or any
of the main sections linked in the menu (Downloads, FAQ, License,
etc). I wouldn't have found this relevant bit of infourmation if
you hadn't told me it existed. Nor would I have ever tried a 1.1.x
version whose numbering suggests is unstable. Is it a stable branch?
