I'd guess that's it's not VSS.next, but that it's something they did from
scratch.

IIRC, MS didn't develop VSS, they bought it from a 3rd party developer.

I was surprised to read that Microsoft is still actually developing VSS,
and that a new version will be coming out in 2005. They claim it will
support http, which is very interesting considering there is no VSS
server; it's just a bunch of clients using lockfiles. Hilarity will
surely ensue.
