[silly question time] What's the dots mean?

Ok, it's not quite Friday, and it's not an off-topic question, but I'm
going to ask anyways ... ;-)

When I perform a check in using the CLI, it prints to the screen the
list of files it's sending to the server, followed by:
  Transmitting file data ................

What do these dots represent? Is it one per file, or one per kb, or one
per second, or , or , or ,

See? What did I tell you, is that a silly question or what?
