And what would be the point of checking it out on windows if it won't
build without the symlink?

It seems to me like there's 3 possibilities for symlinks in subversion:

   1. Not supported (status quo)
   2. Punt on Windows (i.e. warning or error message)
   3. Heroic effort to implement them in some fashion on Windows

I'm just hoping that symlink support isn't waiting for a solution to #3
because it seems like that would be a lot more work for not much benefit.
