keywords for repository/directory revision?

Hello,

I've got a question, about an issue that has been bothering me in CVS
before. When I have a coding project, then I'd like the version number
(of the project) to be output with something like 'myprogram --version'.

However, in CVS there was no way to handle this, as there was no
repository or directory version. Now I'm using SVN, and this information
is available, but I don't know how to automate it.

So I am looking for something like a keyword $directoryVersion$ or
$repositoryVersion$. (I am aware that this would mean that Subversion
must update a file with such a keyword every time there is a local
commit in the directory/repository.)

Is there already a way to solve it, or is it a planned feature, or are
there any thoughts on this?

regards,

Cas Cremers
