Concerning Newbie - repository layout

Well, under Windows at least ... I have created (and recovered)
repositories on mapped network drives (e.g. \\Server\Path\Repos is
mapped to Z:\Path\Repos on your Windows box). Just do not try
file:/// access to such a repos.

However, this has been some time ago, first being in your state of
trial&error while reading the book, then when I had severe
difficulties with the repos (now overcome by newer releases)
making lots of revoers necessary, and there was little to loose
anymore while I could not always occupy the server machine as it
is not dedicated but a peer2peer LAN here. Nevertheless, for my
troubles then it made obviously no difference if I used svnadmin
locally or over the net. Never tried \\server\path\repos with
svnadmin though. svn is a different beast of course.
