Nor should you, on a well-configured system, have any need to set this.
It is/was intended as a means of testing new library routines/moving
binaries to a new location.

But people often compile with this environment variable set, thus
influencing the linker and loader. Why do some programs need it, blame
the developer not knowing how to properly use run-time loader paths.

May I suggest a recompilation?
