Debugging 'svn'

When I execute this command

  svn diff -r#### | less

and type ^C to cancel the pipe, svn leaves temporary files in the
current directory.

I want to debug svn to find the problem. Building subversion produces
a client program, svn, that is a script. How do I get a debug build
of the client program?
