Performance problem with TortoiseMerge with large local files

One of my colleagues finds TortoiseMerge to be very slow with large local
files, e.g. working vs pristine or 2 files in Windows Explorer. The same
files for me are much quicker (10 seconds vs 100 seconds). So far as we
can tell we have the same version of TortoiseMerge (TortoiseMerge 1.9.4,
Build 27285 - 64 Bit , 2016/04/24 13:59:58) and the same settings in
TortoiseMerge. Are there any diagnostics we can use?

Details: comparing 2 55MB xml files. Unified diff is 5MB.
TortoiseMerge for him takes 100 seconds using 5GB memory.
TortoiseMerge for me takes 10 seconds using 1.2GB memory.
"svn diff" for him takes 6.5 seconds using 138KB memory.
"svn diff" for me takes 4.5 seconds using 138KB memory.
