It would be great if they put them back! Are you sure you are not referring to the "canned" columns that M$ allows; there is a pretty extensive list of these in W7 (i.e. Album, Publisher, Search ranking, etc). In versions prior to Vista, developers could add their own "custom" columns to this list. TSVN had columns like SVN Status, SVN Revision, etc. In XP SP3, it made it really easy to sort your files/folders by whether they were modified, when they were modified (I think), their revision number, etc.
