Hi Gavin,
I had exactly the same issue with you regarding merging, it's pretty annoying. It's exactly as you say, whenever it tries to simplify the revisions into a range, it doesn't care which branch the current sandbox is in
Haven't seen the second problem you mention, that part has been working well for me. Once we turned on merge tracking, already merged revisions are always disabled.
