RE: Password protect repository

The manual does mention something about authentication and password protected repositories, can the repository be protected with that password?. It would be a very simple feature just to have a password so that not everyone can perform a checkout. It's a bit hard to imagine that that can not be done.
I'm already using other types of protection but I thought this would be a nice extra feature.
