and I assumed it was incorrect as no data was being passed. This assumption turns out to be correct. I was not aware of the svn command line yesterday. I have now had an opportunity to try it and issued the command

svn status -u

which returned an error validating server certificate, this is an error that was not being returned through the gui interfaces. Having accepted the certificate fingerprint everything appears to be working correctly.
