When you try to commit changes, and the commit fails due to a out-of-date file TSVN gives you the option to immediately update the out-of-date directories/files ("Command failed - Update needed ... Shall I update the working copy and retry?"), that's what I refered to as "automatic update".
This update does not include files which have been dragged into the commit window before trying to commit, even if only those files caused the conflict.
