Svn checkout failure with ToroiseSVN 1.6.12

I know, it's not the latest version, but for various reasons I'm not ready for Subversion 1.7 yet.

I have a repo with a project in it that I've been working on for some time now, primarily using the Linux svn command line client (v.1.4.0), but that I have previously been able to checkout using TortoiseSVN. I recently tried too update from the repo, and got an error (no, I didn't think to record the error at the time). Since this particular working copy is only ever read from the repo, I thought I'd just delete the working copy and check it out again. During checkout, now I get an error message from TortoiseSVN:

Error In directory 'C:\Svn\ZaccariaFreePlay\Soccer Kings\Hacks'
Error Can't open file 'C:\Svn\ZaccariaFreePlay\Soccer
Error Kings\Hacks\.svn\tmp\text-base\SOCCER.IC1.svn-base': The system cannot find the
Error file specified.

This does not appear to be a problem with the repo, because I can checkout, update, commit, log, status, etc. against the repo with the command line client on my linux machines.

Searching the TortoiseSVN bugs database and release history didn't yield anything that looks even close to this, and Google didn't turn up anything likely either.

How can I help figure out what's causing this, and how to fix it?
